Madina Institute aims to be a premier destination for Islamic education in which Muslims from all backgrounds can engage traditional Islamic teachings in a healthy and tolerant environment. In an age when Muslim communities are divided by ethnic, sectarian, and ideological factionalism, Madina Institute hopes to revive the values of love, compassion, and unity that rest at the core of our beloved religion. Our courses and programs will accomplish this by maintaining a commitment to the Qur’an and the Authentic Prophetic Way (Sunnah) while encouraging open dialogue, mature discussion, and free thinking.
Like Islamic educational institutions in the past, Madina Institute aims to serve the Muslim community’s spiritual, educational, and social needs.
Madina Institute USA is a private, nonprofit institution in Duluth GA, the idea of which came about nearly thirty years ago, in 1989. Since its inception in California as the Ahlus Sunnah Association of North America, Shaykh Muhammad al-Ninowy has been committed to making the traditional Islamic Sciences accessible to the next generation of American Muslim scholars on U.S. soil, and calling American Muslims and Muslims worldwide to go back to the basics of the religion: the Qur’an and the Authentic Sunnah, in addition to teaching tolerance, peace, and compassion.
Shaykh Ninowy has been an integral part of the Atlanta community since 2000, when he began teaching students on the weekends as well as delivering sermons at Al-Madina Islamic Center and Institute in Norcross, Georgia. It was during this time that his popularity in the Atlanta area and abroad began to grow due to his ability to apply Islamic teachings to contemporary Western societies while reviving traditional approaches to the study of Islam. It was the increased interest from several dedicated students, which led him to officially found and register the Madina Institute in 2012.
Madina Institute’s first brick and mortar location was in Lilburn, GA, but Shaykh Ninowy’s students quickly outgrew the property and the search for a new one began. In 2014, Madina Institute USA purchased a new property in Duluth, GA, which now serves as the main campus for all activities, including daily instruction, prayers, and Friday services. In 2015, Madina Institute USA launched its inaugural One-Year Intensive in Islamic Studies at the Duluth, GA location with an inaugural class of thirty-five students.
Throughout its history, Madina Institute has encouraged understanding, appreciation, and compassion for the multicultural heritage of humankind while inspiring its students to be active and contributing members of our world and their respective local communities. Through a rigorous, Prophetic-centered education, we enable our students to grapple with and engage in the spiritual, intellectual, ethical, and cultural issues of our time, their implications, and applications to everyday life.
Madina Institute has gained a global presence, with chapters in South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Malaysia, Norway, and most recently Sudan, all of which uphold the same message: Love for all, malice toward none; a message desperately needed in our world today.
The People Behind Madina Institute
The vast majority of masjid functions and activities are run by the hard-working volunteers, both Muslims who live locally, and the students of the Islamic Studies program, who work for the love of Allah and supporting the Deen of Islam.

Open & Inclusive Masjid Culture
Upon walking through our doors, many guests of our mosque notice the open, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere of The Madina Institute. On any given Friday, you’ll see Muslims from all over the world – Europe, Africa, Asia and beyond!
Our mosque/community center was designed to be a place for anyone & everyone to come gather, learn and worship their Lord in peace, serenity and joy. It is a non-judgmental & welcoming space for everyone – for women, men, kids, youth, and for all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Women in Leadership
The Madina Institute (in Atlanta and our newest chapter in in Little Rock, AK) is also the only mainstream Islamic Center [known] in the US to have women in top leadership positions and management. We welcome strong, intelligent, capable women & men from all backgrounds, and have had sisters serving in masjid management, directing & teaching our educational programs, design & marketing, social events, and more. We are grateful to Allah for these blessings, and for making Madina Institute an inclusive, comfortable and active community hub.
