Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is considered an essential element for personal development, professional leadership, and relationship success. This class provides an overview of Emotional Intelligence theories and practice. Areas covered include the basic four dimensions of emotional intelligence: Perceiving Emotion, Facilitating Thought, Understanding Emotion, and Managing Emotion including understanding the relationship between cognition, emotion, and behavior; overcoming internal obstacles to emotional intelligence such as stress or shame; minimizing external obstacles such as Islamophobia; using emotional intelligence to cultivate mental health and wellness, to increase leadership abilities in general, and specifically in pastoral care, parenting, and youth development. This course will incorporate techniques and skill practices to increase and develop the emotional intelligence competencies. It will also include reflection on Islamic techniques of cultivating emotional intelligence, and commentary from classical Islamic literature.
This course will utilize a four-pronged approach:
- An in-depth review of relevant scholarly literature.
- A focus on student development of emotional intelligence competency.
- Integrative exercises and activities to assist students in incorporating the material.
- Excerpts from classical Islamic writing pertinent to the unit being studied.
